Back in the mid-1980s when we were building 800 horsepower for the 14-liter diesel engines, we needed a muffler that could flow great volumes of exhaust. After studying numerous flow charts and designs of how noise travels and what it takes to stop the noise and allow the exhaust to continue to flow, we came up with our straight-through quiet-flow muffler. This muffler actually has a nice deep tone to it and for the young owner-operator it is a little too quiet. However, for us older guys, we love the deep mellow sound to the point where you will crack the window open at night just to hear your engine purr. At an idle or cruising along the level interstate or in the city, this muffler is very quiet even with the Jake Brake on.

Back Pressure: Our muffler has no backpressure and that is why we gain at least one mile per gallon, which equates to 1000 gallons saved for every 100,000 miles driven. This is the best, most economic-performance addition you could add to your truck. Since the flow is not restricted, the muffler gathers no soot or condensation. Because of this, they last the life of the truck. Do yourself a favor and allow your engine to breathe. If you do oil analysis, you will notice the soot level in the engine oil decreases, as do the iron particles. By the way, the iron particles are what wear out the engine, and we have seen a 50% decrease once these mufflers are installed. These mufflers are made to go up the side of the cab or the rear of the bunk. It is a vertical muffler and does not go under the bunk of a W-900-L Kenworth or International.

By the way, some service managers are so ignorant of the study of exhaust flow that they have been taught to believe that a turbocharged diesel engine actually NEEDS backpressure in the exhaust system! They are so wrong. All turbocharged engines do have backpressure in the exhaust manifold before the turbocharger, not in the exhaust pipe. Remember, a 90-degree elbow results in as much backpressure as 13 feet of straight pipe.

The farther the exhaust has to travel, the more it cools and slows down. When this happens, the engine has to push harder to get the exhaust out of the pipe. LONG EXHAUST SYSTEMS LOSE POWER AND USE MORE FUEL. Still, the best place for the mufflers is up the side of the cab. On the dyno with a 475 horsepower MXS Acert Cat, we gained 50 horsepower to the rear wheels and this was a Peterbilt with a single exhaust. We found a 66% reduction in backpressure after the turbo just by installing a $158.00 muffler that was designed for performance and it is still quiet. 51.5"L 10"W 5" inlet 5" outlet. These mufflers are not suitable on trucks with DPF systems.
